New Year's Resolutions vs 5 Great Decisions: A Different Approach

January 4, 2026

January 1st rolls around, and we make our declarations: "This is the year I'll finally…"

We've all been there. The ambitious goals, the initial motivation, the inevitable fade by February.

Here's what I've learned: the problem isn't our lack of willpower. The problem is that resolutions ask us to sustain motivation for an entire year, relying on a future version of ourselves that may or may not show up.

5 Great Decisions works differently.

Instead of declaring what you'll accomplish by December 31st, you ask: "What five decisions can I make today that move me toward the person I want to become?"

The Key Difference

Resolutions are rigid. 5GD is responsive. Resolutions demand perfection. 5GD invites progress. Resolutions happen once a year. 5GD happens every day.

A resolution says: "I will lose 20 pounds by December." 5GD asks: "What decision today serves my future health?"

A resolution declares: "I will finally write that book." 5GD invites: "Where's my opportunity to invest in this project today?"

You're not trying to sustain motivation for 365 days. You're making aligned choices for one day. Then tomorrow, you do it again.

Great decisions aren't made in a year — they're made one day at a time.

Two Ways to Use 5GD in 2026

Option 1: Support your resolutions. If you made resolutions for 2026, use 5GD to actually keep them. Each day becomes an opportunity to make decisions aligned with those goals — without the all-or-nothing pressure that derails most resolutions.

Option 2: Replace resolutions entirely. Or skip resolutions altogether. When you practice making five intentional decisions daily, you're not working toward one predetermined outcome. You're building the capacity to recognize opportunities for growth as they naturally arise.

By next December, you'll be amazed at who you've become — without ever writing down a single resolution.

What's one decision you can make today that your future self will thank you for?
